Throughout the history of painting, flowers have often been used as carriers of meaning, from the Dutch Golden Age still lifes that evoked the fleeting nature of life, to Impressionist garden scenes and the enlarged forms of modern art, in which they become metaphors for beauty, transience, and emotion.
